Rekey or Replace? Securing Your Locks After Moving In

New to your Tucson home? Here is how to decide between rekeying your existing locks and replacing them entirely, and why day one matters.

When you get the keys to a new home, it is easy to assume you are the only person who can open the doors. In reality, you have no idea how many working keys are out there. Previous owners, their kids, contractors, cleaners, real estate agents, and old neighbors may all still have a way in.

Securing your locks should be one of the first things you do after moving in. The question is whether to rekey or replace.

What rekeying actually does

Rekeying keeps your existing locks but changes the internal pins so the old keys no longer work. You get a brand new key, and every previous key becomes useless.

Rekeying is the right choice when:

  • Your existing locks are in good working condition.
  • You like the look and feel of the current hardware.
  • You want to secure the home quickly and affordably.
  • You want several doors keyed to a single new key.

Because it reuses your hardware, rekeying is usually faster and less expensive than replacing every lock.

When replacement makes more sense

Sometimes a fresh set of locks is the better call. Consider replacing the hardware when:

  • The current locks are worn, sticky, or damaged.
  • The finish is dated and you want to upgrade the look.
  • You want a higher security grade than what is installed.
  • You are switching to a smart lock or keypad entry.

A simple rule of thumb

If the locks work well and you just need to control who has a key, rekey. If the locks are old, ugly, or you want new features, replace.

Many homeowners do a mix: rekey the solid deadbolts, replace the one tired knob on the back door, and key everything to one convenient key.

Do it on day one

Whatever you choose, do it early. The stretch between closing and your first night is exactly when unknown keys are a risk. A mobile locksmith can handle the whole house in a single visit, so you sleep that first night knowing you control every door.
